Therapy for young adults

Your late teens and twenties are sold as the best years of your life. For a lot of people they're also the most disorienting. New city, new job or classes, new bills, and no one else in charge. This page is for adults 18 to 29 in Florida who are finding that harder than it looks from the outside.

The first years on your own

Leaving home changes the scaffolding. The routines, the people, the familiar rooms. Even when you wanted to leave, and even when it's going well on paper, there can be a strange loneliness to it. Everyone else seems to have it figured out. You're not sure you do.

It's also a stretch full of firsts: first real job, first lease, first time handling a crisis without calling home. Each one is manageable. Stacked together, they can be a lot.

When old stuff surfaces

A funny thing often happens once you're out on your own. Things from growing up, which you may have barely noticed at the time, start showing up. The way you freeze when someone raises their voice. The way you can't relax unless everything is done. The feeling that you're always about to be in trouble.

Sometimes that's simply what happens when you finally have room to notice. If this sounds familiar, the page on childhood trauma in adults goes into more detail. You don't need clear memories, and you won't be asked to retell anything.

Anxiety around work and study

Exams, presentations, a new manager, the first performance review. For some people the nerves settle with time. For others they grow: a tight chest before every class, dread on Sunday evenings, a racing heart in meetings, or full-blown panic that seems to come from nowhere.

That kind of alarm doesn't always respond to logic or pep talks. The page on anxiety explains how I approach it. If physical symptoms are part of it, get them checked by a doctor first.

If campus counseling has run out

Many college counseling centers are a real help, and they often work with session limits. If you've reached that limit, or you want something outside the school system, private sessions are another option. Students in college towns like Gainesville can meet from their own room, as long as it's private.

Privacy and paying for it

The practice is private pay: $225 per 90-minute session, booked one at a time. Nothing is billed through anyone's insurance plan, which means nothing appears on a parent's plan paperwork. What we talk about is confidential within the usual legal limits, which I explain before we start.

If you study out of state, sessions can only happen while you're physically in Florida. That's a licensing rule, so it applies even if Florida is home. Many students book during breaks and summers.

Not having it figured out yet

There's a lot of pressure in your twenties to look like you've got a plan. The truth is that plenty of people spend this decade changing jobs, cities and friend groups, and feeling behind the whole time. Feeling lost isn't a diagnosis. But if the anxiety or heaviness has stopped being occasional and started running your days, it's worth a conversation. You don't need to arrive with a tidy story.

If you're in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). For emergencies, dial 911.

Questions people ask

The practice is private pay, so nothing is billed to that plan. Sessions are confidential within the usual legal limits, which I explain before we begin.

Yes, while you're physically in Florida at the time of each session. When you're back at school out of state, we can't meet, even by video.

That's your call. Patterns tend to settle in the longer they run, and working on them early can mean they shape fewer of the big decisions ahead. But there's no deadline, and later is fine too.
