Who I help

# Therapy for parents

This page is for parents, but it isn't about parenting advice, and it isn't about your child. The sessions are for you, the adult: your stress, your grief, your history. The practice works with adults and families, ages 18 to 64.

## Carrying your own history

Having kids has a way of bringing your own childhood into focus. You hear your parent's voice come out of your mouth. You react to a toddler's meltdown far more strongly than the moment calls for. You feel a flash of panic when your kid reaches the age you were when something happened to you.

Many parents say the thing they want most is not to pass it on. That's a good reason to look at it. The page on childhood trauma in adults (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/specialties/childhood-trauma) explains how I work with those older patterns, without making you retell them.

## Running on empty

Parenting is relentless in a way that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't done it. The logistics alone could fill a job. Add work, money, a household, maybe a child with extra needs, and it's easy to go months without a moment that's truly yours.

That chronic, never-off feeling is the heart of stress and burnout (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/specialties/stress-and-burnout). It can show up as a short temper, a flat mood, or waking at 4 a.m. with a head full of lists.

## Grieving your own parent while raising a family

Losing a parent while your own kids are young is its own kind of hard. You're expected to keep the routines going, answer their questions about death, and still show up for school pickup. Your own grief gets pushed to the edges of the day.

It deserves more room than that. Healing grief is not forgetting, and you don't have to hold it all together alone.

## Finding 90 minutes

Weekday sessions start at 7:00 AM Eastern, which can mean a session before the house wakes up or after drop-off. Sessions end by 7:00 PM Monday to Thursday and 5:00 PM on Friday. Weekends are closed.

You'll need a genuinely private room where you won't be overheard, or a parked car if that's the only quiet place. Never while driving. The practice is private pay, $225 per 90-minute session, booked one at a time.

## When the whole family is affected

Sometimes a parent's stress is tied to something the whole family went through. If that's your situation, the page on when a family goes through something together (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/who-i-help/families) talks about how that can work. For the broader picture of who this practice serves, see therapy for adults (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/who-i-help/adults).

## You don't have to be a perfect parent

Most parents carry a quiet running list of the ways they're falling short. Not enough patience, not enough time, too much screen time, the wrong thing said at bedtime. That list can grow loud when you're exhausted or when your own history is stirred up.

Therapy isn't a place to be graded on your parenting. Nobody here is keeping score, and nothing you say about a hard day will be held against you. The aim is for you to carry less, react less automatically, and have a little more of yourself available, for your kids and for you. That tends to matter more than getting every moment right. A calmer parent usually matters more to kids than a flawless one.

If you're in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). For emergencies, dial 911.

## Questions people ask

### Will you see my child too?

These sessions are for you. The practice works with adults and families, ages 18 to 64.

### Is it selfish to spend this time on myself?

No. Parents who have some room to breathe tend to have more to give. Taking 90 minutes to work on what you're carrying isn't taking something away from your kids.

### Can I have a session while the family is home?

Only if you have real privacy, a room with a closed door where no one can overhear. If that isn't possible at home, a parked car can work. Never while driving.
