A hurricane that takes the house. A car accident with several people in the car. A long illness that reorganizes everyone's life. The event is shared. The way each person carries it usually isn't. This page is about working with adult family members after something like that. ## The same event, different reactions One sibling can't stop talking about it. Another won't mention it. One parent throws themselves into logistics; the other goes quiet for months. Someone seems fine for a year and then falls apart. Each of those is a normal way for a mind to respond, and none of them is the right one. Those differences can cause friction. People read each other's reactions as not caring, or caring too much. Part of the relief can simply be understanding that everyone is carrying the same thing in their own way. ## The kinds of events I mean A death with no warning, which I've written about on grief after a sudden loss (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/specialties/sudden-loss). A storm that scattered a family across relatives' spare rooms for months, covered on hurricane and storm trauma (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/specialties/hurricane-and-storm-trauma). An accident, a frightening diagnosis, a long illness where the whole family took shifts, which overlaps with caregiver stress (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/specialties/caregiver-stress). ## The one who holds everyone together In most families there's someone who becomes the steady one. They make the calls, handle the paperwork, check on everybody, and never quite stop to feel it themselves. If that's you, you may be the last person in the family to ask for help, precisely because everyone relies on you not needing it. It's worth doing anyway. The steady one gets tired too. ## How the work is set up The work is for adult family members, ages 18 to 64. Each adult can book their own sessions. How to involve more than one family member, and what makes sense for your situation, is something we talk through on the free consultation. Everyone needs to be physically in Florida at the time of their session, but they don't need to be in the same place. One person in Jacksonville and another in Naples works fine. Sessions are 90 minutes by secure video, $225 each, private pay. ## This isn't about blame Hard events can stir up old family patterns: who always carries the load, who gets let off, who said what at the hospital. Those feelings are real, and it's fine to bring them in. But the aim isn't to decide who was right. It's for each person to carry what happened with less weight. The emotional weight often arrives later, once the practical work slows and people go back to their separate lives. That's often when family members notice they're not sleeping, snapping at each other, or avoiding the subject entirely. There's no deadline for reaching out, and no need to wait until everyone agrees it's time. Months or years later is fine. What happened to your family still counts, however long ago it was.
