# Trauma After an Assault

Whether it happened last month or twenty years ago, you get to decide how this goes. That starts here.

How RRT works: https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/approach

## What this looks like

You're always watching who's around you.

Certain places or people feel off limits.

Sleep is broken or hard to reach.

Shame shows up that was never yours to carry.

## How Rapid Resolution Therapy approaches it

You won't be asked to retell what happened. What you share, and when, is up to you.

RRT works with how your mind is holding the experience, so it can carry less of a charge.

## You're in control of this

An assault takes choice away. Therapy shouldn't. You decide what to talk about, how much to say, and when to stop. If you want to pause, we pause. If a topic is off limits today, it's off limits.

If you're in danger right now or need urgent help, please use the crisis line on this page or call 911 before anything else. Scheduled online sessions are not emergency care.

## Common reactions afterward

People describe being on high alert everywhere, avoiding places or people connected to what happened, trouble sleeping, flashes of memory, numbness, or feeling like a stranger in their own body. Many describe shame, as though they did something wrong.

Those are common reactions to being harmed. They're not signs of weakness, and responsibility sits with the person who caused the harm. More on how these reactions work is on the trauma and PTSD (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/specialties/trauma-and-ptsd) page.

## Medical and legal decisions are yours

Whether to seek medical care, whether to report, whether to pursue anything legally: those are your decisions, made on your timeline. I won't push you in any direction. I don't give legal advice. If you want to get medical care, please do; therapy can run alongside it.

## Working without retelling

Rapid Resolution Therapy (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/approach/rapid-resolution-therapy) doesn't require a detailed account. The focus is the charge the experience still carries, the reflexes that fire when something reminds you. That can be worked with while the details stay private.

Sessions are 90 minutes, which leaves room to go slowly and not rush out the door at a hard moment. You can read how a 90-minute session works (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/approach/90-minute-sessions).

## Privacy

You meet from your own space, by secure video, anywhere in Florida. No waiting room, no one seeing you walk in. The practice is private pay, so nothing is billed through an insurance plan. What you say is confidential within the usual legal limits, which I explain before we start.

## Starting when you're ready

There's no right time. Some people reach out within weeks. Others wait years, often because they've been told, or have told themselves, that it wasn't serious enough. If it is affecting you now, it's serious enough to talk about.

The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. You don't have to say what happened in that call. You can simply say you're looking for support after an assault, and we'll talk about how the work goes and whether it feels right to you.

If you're in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). For emergencies, dial 911.

What happened was done to you. How you heal is yours to decide.

## Questions people ask

### Do I have to talk about the details, or report it?

No to both. What you share in session is your choice, and whether to report is entirely your decision. Therapy doesn't depend on either.

### It happened years ago. Is it too late?

No. Plenty of people look for help years or decades later, when the effects are still showing up. It isn't too late to work on how it affects you now.

### What if I blame myself?

Self-blame is one of the most common reactions after an assault. It makes sense as a reaction, but responsibility sits with the person who caused harm. It's something we can work with directly.

Not sure if what you're carrying fits here?

A free 15-minute call is the simplest way to find out.

Rapid Resolution Therapy is a therapeutic approach, not a guarantee of specific results and not a substitute for medical care. Every person's experience is different and individual outcomes vary.
