# How many sessions will I need?

Updated September 29, 2026

It's the most natural question to ask before starting anything: how long will this take? With therapy it matters practically, because of cost and time, and emotionally, because you want to know there's an end in sight.

The honest answer is that it varies, and nobody can tell you in advance. Here's what that means in practice.

## About the tagline

The site's tagline reads: Healing doesn't take years. Sometimes it's just one conversation. The word doing the work in that sentence is sometimes. Not usually. Not typically. Sometimes.

It describes what's possible, not what to expect, and it isn't a promise. It's there because this kind of work is built to be focused and can move faster than people expect. But how fast it moves for you depends on things neither of us can know before we start.

## What affects how many sessions it takes

What you're bringing makes a difference. A single frightening event that's still charged is a different job from years of living on guard in a difficult home. A recent loss is different from grief that has been stuck for a decade.

How many things are tangled together matters too. Real life rarely hands you one neat problem. Anxiety might be sitting on top of an old experience, with burnout draining the energy you'd need to deal with either. We can work on one thread at a time, and sometimes pulling one loosens others. Sometimes it doesn't.

And people are different. Two people with similar histories can respond very differently to the same kind of work.

## Sessions are booked one at a time

There are no packages. You don't buy a block of ten sessions up front and then feel pressure to use them, or to ration them. Each session is booked on its own.

That's deliberate. It keeps the focus on whether the work is helping, rather than on getting through a contract. It also means you're never locked in.

## Deciding together after each session

At the end of each session, we look at what shifted and decide together whether another one makes sense. Sometimes the answer is yes, let's keep going on this. Sometimes it's let's see how things settle over the next few weeks. Sometimes it's that this seems to have landed and you'd like to stop here.

You make that call. If I think more work would help, I'll say so. If I think something else would suit you better, I'll say that too. RRT isn't magic. It doesn't work for every person on every issue, and I'll tell you honestly if I don't think it's the right fit. There's more on the approach in what is Rapid Resolution Therapy? (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/approach/rapid-resolution-therapy)

## Why sessions are 90 minutes

Part of the reason the question has a different answer here is the format. Sessions run 90 minutes, not 50. That leaves room to get to the thing that matters and work with it properly, instead of stopping just as something starts to move. The details are in how a 90-minute session works (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/approach/90-minute-sessions).

## The cost, plainly

Each 90-minute session is $225. The practice is private pay, and insurance isn't billed. Because sessions are booked one at a time, you only ever pay for the session in front of you. The fees page (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/fees) has the details, including the cancellation policy.

If you want to know what the very first session looks like, see what to expect in your first session (https://mcfaddeninstitute.com/resources/first-session). The free 15-minute consultation is a good time to ask anything this page didn't answer.

## Why nobody can tell you in advance

It would be easy to give you a number. It would also be dishonest. Anyone who tells you exactly how many sessions you'll need, before they've met you, is guessing. The mind doesn't follow a schedule, and neither does change.

What I can tell you is how we'll know. After each session, we look at what's different. Is the memory sitting differently? Is the reaction smaller when you run into the thing that used to set it off? Those are the signs that tell us whether to keep going and what to focus on next.

## If you're worried about cost

Therapy is an investment, and it's reasonable to want to know what you're signing up for. Because sessions are booked one at a time, you're never paying for sessions you might not need. You can take a break between sessions to see how things settle, and come back if and when it makes sense. The free consultation is a good time to talk about budget openly.

## What if it isn't helping?

Then we'll talk about it. If the work isn't moving things for you, I'd rather say so than keep booking sessions. Sometimes a different focus helps. Sometimes a different approach or a different clinician would suit you better, and I'll tell you honestly.

## Between sessions

Some of the most useful information shows up in the days after a session, not during it. You might notice a situation that used to set you off lands differently. You might notice nothing much at first, then realize a week later that you haven't thought about the thing in days. It can help to pay gentle attention to that, without turning it into a test.

There's no homework to do. Just live your life, and bring whatever you noticed to the next conversation, if there is one.

If you're still unsure, that's reasonable. Plenty of people start with a single session to see how the work feels before deciding anything else. That's a perfectly sensible way to approach it, and there's no penalty for stopping there.

## Questions people ask

### Can I book just one session?

Yes. Sessions are booked one at a time. You can book one, see how it goes, and decide from there.

### What if one session isn't enough?

Then we talk about it, and you can book another if it makes sense. Many things take more than one session. Needing more isn't a sign that something went wrong.

### Do I have to commit to a set number?

No. There are no packages and no minimum. You decide after each session whether to book another.
